About the festival

Budburst Festival is a celebration of natural wine. It’s the only event in New Zealand where you can drink unique and delightful wine, talk directly to the producers, and hear from the experts all about natural winemaking.

All of this plus delicious food, the Budburst pop-up bar, Christmas shopping sorted at our pop-up retail space, and live music to enjoy throughout the day.

The participating wineries have grown their grapes organically and followed a natural approach to production. But what else goes on, and where do you draw the line? Our educational sessions are designed to help you get the most out of what you’re drinking. Come to grips with the basics, drill down to the scientific detail, taste the difference and find something you never expected. 

Visit the producers’ hall, where the winemakers are standing ready to pour and tell you all about their wines. The hall is free with your ticket price, and has 21 producers pouring nearly 60 wines throughout the day. At 5pm the hall will close and the producers will move to Prefab’s cafe to relax over a wine and more conversation.

Come to Budburst to ask questions and meet the people with answers: the winemakers themselves. Budburst is a place for curiosity and exploration. Don’t be shy - we’re all here to learn and share ideas.

The wine

The wines you’ll taste at the festival are rare indeed, and some aren’t available anywhere else, making Budburst a great opportunity where wine lovers can immerse themselves in this artisan craft. Come, try something experimental, and push the boundaries of your wine experience!

Along with the 21 winemakers in the producers’ hall you’ll find non-alcoholic drinks, Garage Project beer, Antipodes water at the Budburst pop-up bar, along with a further selection of delicious natural wines on a rotating list.

At the Budburst wine bar up to 30 different wines are on offer, including rare delights like Gravner, Puzelat and Lapalu. There are just two bottles of each wine, and once it’s gone it’s gone, so follow @BudburstNZ on Twitter to find out what’s pouring and when, or drop by the bar and take a chance. All wines are reasonably priced.

The learning

There’s so much to discover about natural wine, and at Budburst’s educational sessions wine trade pros will break it down in an open and friendly space. These bite-sized sessions will give everyone plenty of food for thought, and with your new-found knowledge you’ll be confident to make a great choice next time you’re buying a bottle.

Each session will last about 25 minutes. Your Budburst Geek pass includes all educational sessions, or make a gold coin donation on the day if you're on a regular ticket and inspired to get amongst it.

The pop-up retail shop

With just six weeks from Budburst to December 25, sort your Christmas shopping list at the Budburst bottle shop. While you’re at it, pick up something for yourself to keep the Budburst experience rolling. With our range of small-batch bottles, you’re guaranteed to find something you can’t get anywhere else.

The food

Keeping us all fed at Budburst are JP and Amy, the team behind Salty Pidgin in Brooklyn and Noble Rot in the CBD. Their focus on fresh and local seasonal ingredients is an ideal pairing for our festival.

The music

What would wine and food be without music? Playing live throughout the day are some of the best Wellington has to offer.
